The Underrated Appeal of Simplicity

We're all at war with our own brains

We all try to do too much, and we all try to do too many things at once. We're overworked, overstressed, and overwhelmed. We're trying to be the best parent, spouse, and employee possible—and it's not working out for anyone but the companies who profit from our exhaustion.

We can't keep up with this pace forever; eventually we'll either burn out or go insane (or both). The only solution is to learn how to simplify your life—but that's easier said than done when you have all these things you need/want/have-to-do weighing down your daily schedule!

Modern life is too complicated

The “simple” fact is that modern life is complicated. Really, really complicated. The internet, for example, offers such a wealth of information that it can be hard to find what you're looking for—and even harder to know what's trustworthy and what isn't. The same goes for the information you get from other people: whether they're friends or coworkers or strangers on the street, we all encounter so much conflicting advice that sometimes it feels like nothing anyone says makes sense anymore!

And if it feels this way just trying to navigate your own life in the world around us, imagine how difficult it must be when it comes to figuring out how we fit into all of this craziness. Are you supposed to follow your dreams? Or take care of your family first? Should you stay with someone who doesn't make you happy? Sometimes it seems like there are no right answers when life gets complicated!

Complexity isn't comfortable

Complexity can be stressful. It's expensive, time-consuming, and overwhelming. It's confusing, frustrating, and often downright exhausting to work with. We've all experienced this at one point or another: we're trying to find something simple that should be obvious but it's not there—we can't find the solution no matter how hard we look. When you're searching for something that isn't in plain sight, and your frustration mounts as you realize there must be a better way—that’s complexity at its worst.

Conclusion

I'm not trying to say that simple living is the cure for all your problems. I do believe, however, that life becomes a more manageable and enjoyable experience when we take the time to simplify things. I invite you to think about ways that you could simplify your life. Maybe that means simplifying your diet and losing weight, simplifying your wardrobe, and dressing with less clutter, or perhaps simplifying your schedule and arranging your days so you have more time for yourself. Most importantly, I invite you to embrace simplicity and enjoy the new life it creates, despite what other changes it may bring.
